Accessibility statement
Online Ready is an online safety course for students in UK secondary schools. We want every student to be able to use it, whatever device, ability or setting they have.
How accessible is it?
We are building to the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 at level AA. Based on our own review, we believe the course and this website meet most of those requirements, and we are partially compliant while we finish testing and fix the gaps listed below.
What the course offers
- Display choices: text size, a dyslexia-friendly typeface option, dark, light, cream and high-contrast themes, and a colour-blind-friendly mode. The course follows your device's light/dark and high-contrast settings by default.
- Reading support: an extra text spacing switch, and a Listen button that reads each slide aloud using your own device's voice. Nothing is sent anywhere.
- Motion: animations and confetti switch off if your device is set to reduce motion, and there is a manual switch in the course.
- Keyboard and screen readers: every activity can be completed without a mouse or without dragging. Where an activity uses dragging, you can select an item and then select where it goes. Feedback is announced to screen readers, and focus moves to the new slide heading as you go.
- Plain language: the content is written for a reading age of about nine, with no time limits on any activity.
Known limitations
- We have not yet completed testing with a full range of screen readers and voice-control software. Our testing so far has been automated and by code review.
- Text size is adjusted by scaling the page. On some very small screens at the largest setting you may need to scroll sideways in a few places.
- The Listen button depends on the voices installed on your device. Some school devices have none, in which case the button will not appear.
- The teacher and trust dashboards, and the admin area, are built for adults using a desktop browser. They meet the same standard in principle, but have had less testing than the course.
- Certificates are produced as a printable page and a PDF. The PDF is image-based in places and may not read well with a screen reader. Ask us and we will provide an accessible copy.
Tell us about a problem
If you find something you cannot use, or you need content in a different format, email us. Please say which page and device you were using, and any assistive technology. We aim to reply within five working days and to fix problems in the next update where we can.
If you are not happy with our response
If you contact us and are not satisfied with the reply, you can contact the Equality Advisory and Support Service (EASS). For schools, the duty to make reasonable adjustments applies to you as well, so tell us what a student needs and we will help.
